Technology Overview

A biodegradable soft tissue biopsy marker inserts (clips) was developed and tested in vivo. The clips were fabricated using the biodegradable polymers and contain contrast agents. The clips were coated with a hydrophilic biocompatible material, for MRI visualization. In the animal studies we have shown that the clips stayed intact in the animals for three months (unchanged length and morphology). Barium sulfate containing clips are superior under X-ray than iodixanol clips. Hyaluronic acid coating enabled visualization under MRI and US. Histopathological examination revealed that the clips are safe, with no signs of systemic toxicity. Overall, safe biodegradable clips that are visible in all three modalities (X-ray, US, and MRI) has been developed.


The technology has been developed after conversations with practitioners looking for a simpler, biodegradable option.
