A New Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Device (OVD) for Cataract Surgery

Background

  • A cataract pathology causes the partial or entire lens clouding inside the eye, resulting in blurred or distorted vision. Cataract retrieval surgery is one of the most frequent medical procedures performed in the world.
  • A Phacoemulsification technique utilizes high-intensity ultrasound energy for the fragmentation and emulsification of the cataractous lens. Since this procedure is traumatic to the tissues surrounding the anterior chamber, there is a need to protect the endothelial cells during cataract surgeries

Our Innovation

The researchers developed a “Smart” Ophthalmic Viscoelastic Device employing thermo-responsive polymeric system (OVD). The OVD is injected to the anterior chamber in a capsular bag and creates a space between the lens and the corneal endothelial cells constituting a physical barrier. The OVD remains in place as clear gel throughout the surgery, to support and protect the cornea. At the end of the surgery, the OVD is easily removed through a small bore needle.
